Kit required

Kit bag

All kit should be packed into a collapsible holdall. General limit is 3ft x 1.5ft x 1.5ft (90cm x 45cm x 45cm), or equivalent volume. Please do not bring suitcases. Rucksacks should only be brought if they have a removable frame or are reasonably collapsible. (Lots of people use standard hiking rucksacks and these are ok.) Any problems with this please e-mail the event organiser.

All kit should be packed in dry bags/plastic bags or the holdall lined with a waterproof liner (e.g. bin liner) - hatches have been known to leak sometimes!

Kit list

The following is a recommended kit list. It is not exhaustive, so please feel free to bring additional items if you wish, but do keep valuables to a minimum.

• At least one (pairs of):
  • Jumpers/Fleeces - wear fleece and jumper over shirt and under waterproofs. Waterproofs do not provide much warmth on their own.
  • Trousers - pair to wear underneath sailing waterproofs. Quick drying and loose fitting trousers are better than jeans.
• Base layer clothes (preferably not cotton) to include:
  • T-shirts/turtlenecks - base layer synthetic.
  • Socks.
  • Underwear
• Bring an appropriate amount of clothes for the duration of the trip. In addition, include spares in case you get wet! Do not rely on being able to wash your clothes as they do not dry easily at sea. When packing remember even in summer it can get cold sitting in the wind. Bring plenty of layers as you would for any outdoor holiday.

Also, don't forget all the other bits and pieces you'll need, such as:

• Sunglasses - it can be bright on the water
• Warm hat & sun hat - to keep the sun off and your ears warm
• Sleeping bag (packed in a plastic bag; see below)
• Washkit (including towel)
• Camera
• Some cash for the pub
• Swimming kit
• RYA logbook, if owned
• Passport, if sailing abroad

Waterproof kit

The club has 8 waterproof Musto MPX kits (salopettes and spray jackets) and multiple pairs of sailing boots of different sizes available in Skylark. The fee for borrowing the club waterproof kits and boots is included in the trip fees. The club aims to get new kit every 5 years and new boots every 2 years. 

Electronics

As long as you are careful with them it is fine to bring electronic items on the boat, and most people bring phones, cameras and mp3 players etc. (we don't guarantee the safety of these items!)

The boat has a good music system, capable of playing CDs and mp3s/iPods etc. We have deck speakers, and music on deck makes everyone happy, so bring along your favourite stuff to play while we sail!

I would think carefully before bringing a laptop along, as you are unlikely to need it, but people have brought them on the boat in the past without any problems.

Sleeping bag

Please do not forget to pack your sleeping bag. If you do not have one in Cambridge and cannot borrow one from a friend, please get in touch with the event organiser. We don't keep any spares to lend out, but can hopefully advise on where you can get one.

As with your other kit, a waterproof container to keep your sleeping bag in during the day is very helpful - getting into a wet sleeping bag at night is not a pleasant experience!
