RYA Competent Crew "This is for beginners and those who would like to become active crew members, rather than just passengers. By the end of the course you should be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy, and assist in all the day to day routines."
The RYA Competent Crew course has no prerequisites. It has a minimum duration of 5 days and is often completed over 3 weekends, a 3 day trip and a weekend, or all in one go on a 5 day trip. On completion of the course you will be issued with an RYA Competent Crew certificate. More information is available on the RYA's website.
RYA Day Skipper Practical "This course gives you the chance to take charge on short passages under instruction. You will concentrate on pilotage, boat handling, seamanship, and navigation."
To start the RYA Day Skipper Practical course you must have either completed an RYA Competent Crew course, or have practical sailing ability to that level. You must also have navigation and theory knowledge to RYA Day Skipper Shorebased level. In addition you must have logged a minimum of 5 days, 100 miles, and 4 night hours onboard a sailing yacht. You are also required to have completed the VHF and 1st aid Theory Courses. The course has a minimum duration of 5 days. On completion of the course you will be issued with an RYA Day Skipper license. More information is available on the RYA's website.
Syllabus This one-day course covers all the usual first aid subjects, from a boating perspective. It is aimed at anyone who goes afloat, whether on inland waters, rivers, estuaries or on cross channel passages. This course is a requirement for CUYC First mates and Skippers and an RYA requirement for Coastal Skipper Yachtmaster.
Format The is a one-day course, 9am-4pm on Saturday 3rd of May.
Certificate Upon successful completion of this course you will receive an RYA First Aid Certificate, valid for 3 years.
