Overview of the Course and Syllabus

Syllabus

The course will cover all aspects of navigation, meteorology, safety, and seamanship to RYA Yachtmaster Offshore level. The course will be taught by an experienced instructor. The course will meet the latest specifications set out by the RYA and all of the course materials have been updated and expanded for the online format.

Format

The course will be run entirely online including teaching, revision, and exams. We will use Timeout; a free video conferencing platform. All the course materials will also be available for viewing and download from the CUYC website. Apart from that the course will be run in the usual 8 week format: 1 normal teaching session per week for 8 weeks (Thursday evenings starting on the 21st of January), plus 3 weekend days (20th and 21st of February, and the 13th of March).

Please make sure that you have access to a computer, for example a laptop or tablet, and a suitable internet connection. You will also need a quiet place to work during the teaching sessions and a suitably sized desk or workspace for working on a nautical chart.

Homework

There is at least 3 hours of homework to complete each week. It is vital that you can commit to completing the homework exercises. In addition to this we recommend that you spend at least another hour revising the week's material.

Exams

The course features 3 exams: Chartwork, IRPCS (International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea), and Passage Planning.

Certificate

Upon successful completion of this course you will receive an RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased Certificate. This certificate covers all of the relevant theory up to RYA Yachtmaster Offshore level. If you are working towards a RYA Day Skipper certificate this means you will then only need to complete the practical RYA Day Skipper course.

Prerequisites

There are no formal prerequisites for the course. However, it is highly recommended that you have some sailing experience and a basic knowledge of navigation. If in doubt, please contact the course organiser
Christina Boukouvala (profile).

Course Administration Details

The cost of the course includes everything you will need: student course pack (training charts, training almanac, and and exercise booklet), course notes, and an IRPCS booklet. Plotters and dividers are optional as some people will already have them, however they are essential. All of these materials will be posted to you before the start of the course.

If you do not have an active CUYC membership then the website will automatically charge you an extra £15. Your membership will then be valid for one year from the current date.
