Overview of Course and SyllabusRYA Yachtmaster Shorebased OverviewThis is a complete course in navigation, meteorology, boat management and collision regulations. It is most suitable for those with at least some previous experience of sailing, but beginners are also welcome and can be very successful on this course. The course is essential for sailors hoping to advance to practical sailing qualifications such as Yachtmaster; for others, it is an enjoyable way to enhance your sailing experience and learn about life at sea, in the company of friendly CUYC sailors and instructors.
The course will run on Thursday evenings (you must attend a minimum of six out of the eight sessions). You should also be prepared to commit a little time outside the course for personal study and homework.
Exam & Revision DaysThere are four exam papers for the course. The allocated time for these is 6 hrs. The papers are in Chartwork/Navigation, Rules of the Road (IRPCS), Meteorology, and General Seamanship. We run recap and exam days mid-way through term and at the end of term. The dates are:
You must attend at least two of these days in order to have time to take all the exam papers. Most students will find themselves ready to take the IRPCS (Rules of the Road) and Chartwork exams on the mid-term exam day, and then take the General Seamanship and Meteorology exams at the end of the course. Even if you do not intend to take any exam on a particular exam day, we strongly recommend attending the session, in order to benefit from the recap teaching we offer. The course is taught at a reasonably fast pace, so these recap sessions are very useful to help people catch up and prepare for the challenges of the exams.
The exams are official papers produced by the RYA. You must pass all four papers to obtain the qualification. If you are not successful at the first attempt, you can retake any paper on a subsequent day. If you need to retake an exam after the end of the course, there may be an additional charge (usually £15 per paper) to cover the cost of the room, invigilation and marking. The exam and revision days held in the same term as the original course are included in the course price.
Course Administration DetailsThe cost of the course includes almost everything you will need: charts, navigation tables, the course handbook, guide to the Rules of the Road, instruction, room hire and some refreshments, but excludes a plotter and divider set which some people might already have (see the FAQ). You should bring a notebook and pencils. You may also like to purchase companion books and other learning materials to accompany the course, details of which are provided but are not considered essential. CUYC policy is that current students at the university will be given priority for signup on this course. Everyone will be given good notice as to whether or not they have got a place.
