Every year when the summer programme drops, I’m torn—do I go for a laid-back sightseeing trip or dive into an adventurous passage? If you know that feeling, this is the trip for you!
We’ll have a big journey ahead—over 400NM to cover in a week—but don’t worry, I don't plan on sailing non-stop from Copenhagen to Stockholm. We’ll break it up with 2-3 overnight passages, plus stops at historic destinations along Sweden’s coast. I'm thinking Kalmar, Visby, and finally, the stunning archipelagos of Stockholm.
It’ll be a balance of adventure at sea and relaxing and exploring the ports. Check out the rough itinerary below, but we'll sea where the wind takes us ;)
Day | Itinerary |
---|---|
Saturday | Arrive on Skylark and do shopping |
Sunday | Leave Copenhagen in the morning, sailing towards Kalmar |
Monday | Sailing and arriving in Kalmar in the evening |
Tuesday | Morning in Kalmar. Leave Kalmar late afternoon/evening to sail towards Visby |
Wednesday | Arrive in Visby around midday |
Thursday | Leave Visby around midday/mid-afternoon for Stockholm |
Friday | Sailing through archipelagos to Stockholm |
Saturday | Leave the boat :( |
Hi, I’m Sarah, and I’ll be your skipper for this trip!
I joined CUYC four years ago when I started my PhD at Cambridge, and I’ve been hooked on sailing ever since. I grew up dinghy sailing, but it was joining CUYC that introduced me to bigger boats, and now sailing is a huge part of my life! This will be my fourth summer programme and my second year as skipper.
Whether you're new to sailing or have some experience, I want to make sure everyone feels welcome and gets the most out of the trip. My goal as skipper is to help you learn at your own pace, enjoy the adventure, and, most importantly, bond with the crew. The best trips, in my experience, are the ones where the crew feels like a close-knit group by the end.
I love introducing people to sailing, and I’m excited to show you the ropes, whether you're looking to improve your skills, complete your first passage, or just have a fun and relaxing time with a great group of people. I'm really looking forward to getting to know you all and sharing this experience!
No experience is required! For the night sails, we’ll split into 'watches,' which are just small groups of 2-3 people on different shifts throughout the night. Everyone will take turns steering the boat on the longer passages, but don’t worry—we’ll teach you how to do it, and there will be an experienced watch leader on each shift to guide you and ensure everything runs smoothly.
Apart from the trip cost you pay when you sign up, there will also be expenses for food, marinas and diesal during the week. These will be sorted out on the trip via the Splitwise app, and usually come around to £100. You must also pay for your own transport to and from the handover marina.
You will need to arrange transport to and from the marina. We will try to coordinate this as a crew together in advance. Do not book any flights or travel until your skipper has confirmed your place and contacted you.
See the "What to Bring" tab for the full list, but bring warm clothing, seasickness remedies if needed, sleeping bag, personal items, passport, and a spirit of adventure!
