This trip is going to be an adventurous one! Leaving from Ipswich and heading over the north sea, through the Keil Canal to Copenhagen! We are going to go some serious sailing and see some wicked places. What I plan to achieve is a visit to Heligoland - a very interesting wee German island that was key in World War Two (see 'Operation Big Bang' on Wikpedia) and is now something of a curiousity in the North Sea.
This is Denmark's Coast:
This is Copenhagen:
This is Helgoland:
And this is a picture of the North Sea:
This was the Kiel Canal back in 2019 (a very exciting and interesting experiece!):
There are a whole number of potential exciting and beautiful things we could encounter. We'll likely figure out a plan once the crew is confirmed, but here is what I thought:
- Long North Sea passage from Ipswich to Helgoland
- Possibility of a stop in Ijmieden to see Amsterdam
- Good food on board
- Dolphins and whales!
- Explore Heligoland
- Stop off in some Danish harbours to explore
- Ending up in Copenhagen and having a jolly old time in this fun city
- Good exciting sailing
Please contact Conor Bolas (profile) if you have any questions about the trip.
Please do not make any travel arrangements until your place has been confirmed and you have heard from your skipper!
I am Conor! I studied at King’s but now work as a shipping incident technical adviser. I have been sailing since I was 15, where I learned on dinghies on my native Isle of Skye in the north of Scotland. I only got into sailing larger boats at Cambridge, and have been sailing with CUYC for almost ten years. The club has offered some wicked opportunities to sail in some amazing places with some amazing people. I basically absolutely love everything about sailing – the sea, the wind, the adventure and the technical aspects of a boat. I particularly enjoy being able to visit places you wouldn’t otherwise - exciting and interesting places. I qualified as a CUYC skipper in March 2018 and have since crossed Biscay with the Club, got further qualifications and crossed the Atlantic in 2023.
Hello! I’m Claudia and I’ll be your first mate for the week! I am a final year medical student ar Robinson College and this year's VC Sailing. I’ve been involved with CUYC since 2022 and this will be my fourth summer programme! I love this club, all the incredible sailing opportunities is provides, and all the people you meet. Can't wait for another trip full of adeventure & sailing!
While onboard we hope to cook up some wicked things – my (Conor's) particular favourite to cook on board is Mexican burritos, nachos and other mexican stuff, but I am always open to experimenting and trying some random things! Please do bring a recipe!
Apart from the trip cost you pay when you sign up, there will also be expenses for food, marinas and diesal during the week. These will be sorted out on the trip via the Splitwise app, and usually come around to £100. You must also pay for your own transport to and from the handover marina.
You will need to arrange transport to and from the marina. We will try to coordinate this as a crew together in advance. Do not book any flights or travel until your skipper has confirmed your place and contacted you.
Please see the 'What to Bring' tab for more information on what to bring.
