This popular one-day course will teach you all aspects of operation of VHF-DSC radios. Practice with real radio sets and walk away with a life-long RYA certificate of competence.

Overview

A VHF Day Course and Exam on the same day. The course is in two halves: the morning session on general radio procedures and calls, and the afternoon session with the GMDSS (distress alerting) system and practical operation of radios and voice procedure. There will be time for lunch in between the halves of the course; after the instructed part of the course, there is an exam on various aspects of marine radio operation, which, once passed, will entitle you to life-long RYA Certificate of Competence. Please note your exam script will be retained for five years according to RYA requirements. Maximum number of students per instructor: 12.

Students are required to have a prior knowledge of the phonetic alphabet (the ANSI one) and to pay the RYA for the examination in advance (£70), at http://www.rya.org.uk/courses-training/courses/specialist/Pages/src-exam.aspx.

You should also bring along one passport sized photograph of yourself for the certificate. See checklist below.

Don't Forget:

Before coming to the course, please make sure you have

  • Learned the phonetic alphabet (the ANSI one) (there will be very little time to do it during the course),
  • Paid membership this year,
  • Registered a CUYC account and filled in your crew register,
  • Paid for the course. Please use the paypal link at the top of this page.
  • Registered and paid for the RYA exam, and printed off the application form/examination voucher you receive, at http://www.rya.org.uk/training/theory/src-exams. (bring the form & other paperwork you receive!)
  • On the day of the course please bring a passport size photograph (of yourself, obviously). This is required for the RYA to issue your certificate.
