"This is for beginners and those who would like to become active crew members, rather than just passengers. By the end of the course you should be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy, and assist in all the day to day routines."
The RYA Competenet Crew course has no prerequisites. It has a minimum duration of 5 days and is often completed over 3 weekends, a 3 day trip and a weekend, or all in one go on a 5 day trip. On completion of the course you will be issued with an RYA Competent Crew certificate. More information is available on the RYA's website.
"This course gives you the chance to take charge on short passages under instruction. You will concentrate on pilotage, boat handling, seamanship, and navigation."
To start the RYA Day Skipper Practical course you must have either completed an RYA Competent Crew course, or have practical sailing ability to that level. You must also have navigation and theory knowledge to RYA Day Skipper Shorebased level. In addition you must have logged a minimum of 5 days, 100 miles, and 4 night hours onboard a sailing yacht. You are also required to have completed the VHF and 1st aid Theory Courses. The course has a minimum duration of 5 days.
