5 days of practical training at either RYA Competent Crew or RYA Day Skipper level, depending on your previous experience. Taught by an experienced RYA Instructor.

Joining location: Ipswich Haven Marina, Ipswich, IP3 0EA

Yacht: Skylark (Beneteau First 40.7)

Maximum number of students: 5

  • Waterproof hire (Musto MPX jacket and salopettes)
  • Waterproof boot hire

Prerequisites:

  • RYA Competent Crew: None.
  • RYA Day Skipper Practical: RYA Competent Crew or equivalent. Navigation and theory knowledge to RYA Day Skipper Shorebased level. Minimum of 5 days, 100 miles, and 4 night hours logged onboard a sailing yacht.

Additional options:

  • Club membership (one year) - £30 (if you do not currently have an active membership)

RYA Competent Crew

"This is for beginners and those who would like to become active crew members, rather than just passengers. By the end of the course you should be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy, and assist in all the day to day routines."

The RYA Competenet Crew course has no prerequisites. It has a minimum duration of 5 days and is often completed over 3 weekends, a 3 day trip and a weekend, or all in one go on a 5 day trip. On completion of the course you will be issued with an RYA Competent Crew certificate. More information is available on the RYA's website.

 

RYA Day Skipper Practical

"This course gives you the chance to take charge on short passages under instruction. You will concentrate on pilotage, boat handling, seamanship, and navigation."

To start the RYA Day Skipper Practical course you must have either completed an RYA Competent Crew course, or have practical sailing ability to that level. You must also have navigation and theory knowledge to RYA Day Skipper Shorebased level. In addition you must have logged a minimum of 5 days, 100 miles, and 4 night hours onboard a sailing yacht. The course has a minimum duration of 5 days and is often completed over 3 weekends, a 3 day trip and a weekend, or all in one go on a 5 day trip.
