Hello! This weekend serves as an introduction to racing on yachts. It's intended for anyone who has either never done in any form of sailing racing, or indeed has raced on dinghy's but not yachts. Plan is to arrive in Ipswich on Friday evening (time is negotiable). Saturday with involve practising the various specialised positions that yacht racing demands (e.g. bow, mast, pit, trim). We will go over what this involves, and give you the chance to have a go at it yourself. We will then go over the various racing manoeuvres. Sunday this will be put into practise against the clock.
While experience sailing any form of boat is preferred, it is not absolutely necessary.
Further details will follow in an email once you have signed up.
GET HYPED!
P.S.: Please bear in mind it'll be CHILLY. If you need to hire waterproofs, please let us know in your sign up note.

Racing with CUYC Previously, CUYC’s racing division has only committed itself to more serious competitions, namely BUSA Yachting and Varsity (which we won last year!!; see below). We do not plan to change our commitment to these events, but also hope to make racing more accessible to those who have not tried it before (see ‘casual’). Competitive and casual racing 1. Competitive Yacht racing is a discretionary full blue sport and hence requires commitment. Students of the University compete with Oxf*rd and other universities at Varsity and BUSA respectively during a week-long event over the Easter vacation. We have a long tradition of doing well in both, so would like to maintain this. We have a long tradition of doing well in both, so would like to maintain this. We are also set to attend international regattas in 2018 (thus far have been invited to Russia, China and Turkey! – someone said free travel?) and enter racing weekends with Sunsail. We are currently looking to expand our opportunities and have contacted the Royal Thames Yacht Club and the Royal Southern Yacht Club so that we could compete in various racing series around the country! We also run shore-based courses on sail trim and racing tactics. 2. Casual Due to high levels of interest, we are looking forward to setting up some more ‘casual racing’, which is to be accessible all members of the Club (i.e. not only students/the most experienced sailors). While our plans are yet to be fully finalised, opportunities are likely to include attending Sunsail racing weekends, Hamble Spring series and/or others. This may be attended as and when people are available, meaning it is much less commitment than the team for Varsity/BUSA. It is also a great way to get into racing without having prior experience, putting you in a great position to consider competitive racing the following year, should your ambitions incline you this way. This will likely kick off properly in Lent term. |
