Overview of the Course and Syllabus

Syllabus

This course will cover all aspects of navigation, meteorology, seamanship, and safety, to RYA Yachtmaster Offshore standard. The course will be taught by our experienced and expert instructors. The course will run to the new specifications and updated course syllabus for 2017. All teaching material has also been revised and updated.

Format

The course will run in the usual 8 week format; 1 teaching session per week for 8 weeks (Wednesdays from the 24th of January), plus 3 exam and revision days (24th of February, 17th and 18th of March).

Homework

There are two to three hours of homework to do each week. We then recommend that you spend an additional few hours revising the material that has been taught that week.

Exams

There are a total of four exams: Chartwork, IRPCS (International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea), Passage Planning, and the General Assessment. The Passage Planning exam has superseded the old Meteorology exam. The General Assessment paper is optional if you already hold a RYA Day Skipper Shorebased or Practical certificate.

Certificate

Upon successful completion of this course you will receive an RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased Certificate. This means that you will then not have to do any more shorebased navigation courses as you work your way up the practical side of the scheme all the way to RYA Yachtmaster Offshore level.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this course. However it is recommended that you have at been sailing before and come with at least a basic understanding of navigation.
