Overview of the Course and SyllabusSyllabus
This new one-day classroom based course will cover all things sail trim and rig tuning. The aim of the course is to demystify sail trim and give you a solid foundation upon which to build your practical skills. Good sail trim is important for safety, comfort, and of course speed whilst sailing, and it is essential for anyone wanting to get into racing.
Topics covered on the course include: Names and terminology Different types of sails and their uses Points of sail and apparent wind Control lines and their function Upwind trim (entry, draft, lift and drag, leeway, etc.) Spinnakers, both symmetric and asymmetric (setting, trimming, maneuvering, and dropping) Balance and stability ...and much more
Format This is a one-day classroom based course. The material is taught primarily using a presentation, talked through and discussed by the instructor. There are then exercises and question and answer sessions at the end of each section. There will then be a CUYC Pub Meet following the course!
Exam There is no formal exam for this course, however there is a quiz at the end of the course to check your understanding! Prerequisites There are no prerequisites for this course. However to get the most out of the course we recommend that you have at least been sailing once before whether that is on a yacht or dinghy etc. Course Administration DetailsThe cost of the course includes your share of the room hire, cost of teaching materials, and instructor payment.
