Any Questions...?
Who can come sailing?
We are open to everyone at Cambridge University - Students, Fellows, Staff and affiliate members. CUYC gives sign up priority to Junior Members (current students) when signing up for trips and events.
How much does it cost?
Apart from the trip cost you pay when you sign up, there will also be expenses for food, marinas and diesal during the week. These will be sorted out on the trip via the Splitwise app, and usually come around to £100. You must also pay for your own transport to and from the handover marina.
Do I need any sailing experience to come on a trip?
No! Complete beginners are very welcome on CUYC trips unless stated otherwise (some adventurous trips are restricted to experienced people only). We'll teach you (almost) everything!
Will you keep me safe?
Yes! Each crew has a qualified skipper and first mate so you can rest assured you are in safe hands.
Do I need special kit to come on-board?
If needed you can hire waterproofs and boots from the club and won't need much specialised kit, have a look at the "What to Bring" webpage for more info!
What will we do onboard?
Trips are very varied and you can get up to all sorts of things on board! You'll have the chance to learn about sailing a yacht and get involed in all aspects of sailor life. Many trips will give you the chance to explore new places on land too. You should get the chance to swim in the sea and maybe even try a spot of fishing. Your fellow crewmates will soon become fast friends and you'll find ways to entertain each other with card games, reading novels, sharing music etc.
What will we eat on-board?
Your skipper will coordinate meals onboard and what you eat will depend on you and your new crew's dietary preferences. Be sure to let your skipper know what you love and hate before you come on-board. You'll get the chance to get creative in the galley and craft gourmet meals at sea!
Where will we sleep on-board?
Our 40ft yacht Skylark sleeps 8 in 3 double cabins and two single berths. The berths are comfortable and the soothing waves of the sea will rock you to sleep! You'll just need to bring along a sleeping bag/sheet/pillow depending on the weather and your preferences.
Can we come as a group of friends?
We are more than happy for friends to sail together but operate a first-come-first-served sign up process with priority given to junior members. Be sure to let us know if you want to sail with your friends and be open minded, you are bound to make new friends on-board!

Signing Up:
How to sign up:
Click the Sign Up button to register your interest in a trip. If you are new to the Club you will be asked to create a CUYC account. You'll be shown as interested until you pay for the trip by paypal. Once you've signed up and paid you just have to wait for the skipper to confirm your place and get in touch.
How places on trips are assigned:
If there are more sign-ups than there are spaces on the trip places are assigned on a first-come-first-served basis with initial priority given to current undergraduate and postgraduate students (junior members). If you have requested to sail as a group please be aware that we only have 6 spaces for crew on each trip so if you've all signed up to a popular trip we may ask if you can move to a different trip.
Once you've been confirmed:
The skipper will get in contact with everyone who is on the trip and will give you lots of helpful info. They'll help with organsing transport to get everyone to the boat at the right time so don't book any transport before you are confirmed for the trip and the skipper has made contact with you and instructed you to do so.
Cancellations and Refunds:
We will endeavour to be as sympathetic as possible if you find you can no longer go on the trip. The most important thing is that as soon as you realise you can't make it, contact Coco Newton (profile). In general we will offer you a refund only if your space is filled by someone else. The earlier you let us know the more likely that is to happen. If special circumstances arise that prohibit you from attending the trip it is possible that you will be refunded and this is decided upon by the CUYC Committee on a case by case basis.
