This trip will be adventuruous! Starting in Plymouth, we will sail to Weymouth stopping in the Channel Islands.
We will be closely watching the COVID restricitons and change our plans if need be! There are no formal immigration controls when travelling within the CTA. You don't need to carry your passport or identity card for immigration purposes, however customs and immigration officers may ask to see your photo ID and evidence of your UK immigration permissions.
Expectations:
As with most CUYC trips, it will be a mix of sailing time to explore on land - it depends on what the crew wants. I personally prefer secluded anchorages.
As a crew member, you'll sleep on board the yacht in your sleeping bag and contribute to the general running of the boat - incluidng the sailing! (And the cooking, shopping, cleaning blah blah). There will be lots of opportunities for those new to sailing to get experience and learn from the skippers how the boat works!
Expenses will be shared for food and marina fees - this usually comes out as between £50 - £80 for the week.
Likely, once the crew is set, we can meet in Cambridge for a drink or something so we all know each other!
There are a whole number of potential exciting and beautiful things we could encounter. We'll likely figure out the plan once the crew is confirmed, but here are some possibilities:
- A chance to explore those small not-often-explored places
- Wildlife: dolphins, whales, basking sharks, seals and maybe more
- Swimming and snorkelling
- Good food on board
- Adventurous sailing
Please contact Conor Bolas (profile) if you have any questions about the trip. Importantly: please do not make any travel arrangements untill your place has been confirmed and you have heard from your skipper!
I am Conor! I was a student at King’s studying the atmosphere, but now I work to save the world from oil spills. I have been sailing since I was 15, where I learned on dinghies on my native Isle of Skye in Scotland. I have been sailing with CUYC since 2015 and have had some amazing experiences with the club. I love it all - the sea, the wind, the food possibilities, the technicalities of the boat and the weather! I particularly enjoy being able to visit you wouldn't otherwise - exciting and interesting places. I really like having a good laugh and having fun too. I qualified as a CUYC skipper in march 2018 and have run lots of trips since then in all different conditions, chilled and adventurous. This trip will add to that experience and I can't wait!
What's my favourite food on Skylark? While onboard we hope to cook up some wicked things - my particular favourite t cook on board is Mexican burritos, nachos and other mexican stuff, but I am open to experimenting and trying some random things! I like seafood and trying to catch my own meals! My real secret weapon though is that my partner is a professional pastry chef!
