Shorebased Theory Courses

Overview Theory Practical Specialist Questions?

RYA Day Skipper Theory

This is a basic course in navigation, meteorology, safety, IRPCS, and general seamanship.

Courses are run on a regular basis by CUYC and those on the course are assumed to have no previous theorectical knowledge, though some limited practical experience is desirable.

Following completion of the course sucessful candidates will have all the theorectical knowledge needed for the RYA Day Skipper Practical course.

In general CUYC run the Day Skipper Theory course simultaneously with the Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Theory course. We find that the majority of students are able to cope with the added complexity of the Yachtmaster level theory even if they have not studied navigation before, and this arrangement allows people to get a 2 for 1 deal, gaining both certificates and prevents people missing out on the basic seamanship taught at Day Skipper level that is not covered in the Yachtmaster Theory syllabus and thus would be lost if students bypassed the Day Skipper Theory course all together. This arrangement also has the advantage of allowing people to choose which level of certificate to take during the course based on how they are coping with the course, rather than needing to decide at the outset which course to take.

Pre-course requirements:Some sailing experience is recommended (e.g. at least one weekend)

Course Length: 1 Term, 8 x 3hr evening sessions + last weekend of term (40 hrs teaching)

This course is requirement for: RYA Day Skipper Practical course

RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Theory

This is an advanced theory course, which teaches all the theory in navigation, meteorology, safety, IRPCS, and general seamanship that is required for the RYA/DoT Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore Certificates of Competences and RYA Coastal Skipper Practical course.

Courses are run on a regular basis by CUYC and those on the course are assumed to already have a knowledge of basic navigation and seamanship to the level of CUYC Mate or RYA Day Skipper Theory.

Following completion of the course sucessful candidates will have all the theorectical knowledge needed for higher levels up to CUYC Skipper.
