Sailing in the Mediterranean - The Aegean Sea

Details Athens and Pireus Athens transport Kit Sign Up

Kit

Kit bag

All kit should be packed into a collapsible holdall. General limit is 1m x 0.5m x 0.5m, or equivalent volume. Please do not bring suitcases. Rucksacks and wheely-bags should only be brought if they have a removable frame or are reasonably collapsable. Any problems with this please e-mail Greg Chadwick (profile).

All kit should be packed in plastic bags or the holdall lined with a waterproof liner (e.g. bin liner) - hatches have been known to leak sometimes!

Kit list

The following is a recommended kit list. for the Aegean in April. It is not exhaustive so please feel free to bring additional items if you wish, but do keep valuables to a minimum.

The weather in this area in April is similar to that in southern England in July: so rain is not unlikley.

This is a very large trip, and communications are vital. So you please bring a mobile phone and keep it in a pocket on your person at all times that you are on-shore if you can.

  • Please ensure your mobile
    USB 12V adapter
    • can be used in Greece, if everything goes to plan, you probably won't need to use it, but if it doesn't you will be very glad you have it.
    • has a decent amount of credit on (say £10) before you leave the UK.
    • try and bring a charger that fits in a 12v socket (like you find in a car), if you don't have one then a usb charging cable can probably be used.
  • At least one (pairs of):
    • Jumpers/Fleeces - wear fleece+jumper over shirt and under waterproofs
    • Trousers - pair to wear underneath sailing waterproofs
  • Base layer clothes (preferably not cotton) to include:
    • T-shirts/turtlenecks - base layer synthetic
    • Socks
    • Underwear
    • drying/wicking long-johns are not needed for the Med., a pair of jeans will be fine if you have proper sailing overtrousers.

Bring appropriate quantity of base layer clothes to match the duration of your trip. In addition, include a complete spare set in case you get wet! Do not rely on being able to wash your clothes as they do not dry easily at sea.

  • Sunglasses - VITAL -it can be bright in the water
  • Hat - to keep the sun off, and possibly to keep your ears warm if night sailing,
  • Waterproofs (see below)
  • Sun cream / UV-lip stuff
  • Sea Boots (useful; see below but not essential) or Trainers. In total, we recommend that you pack at least two pairs of footwear in total in case you get wet. Soft soles, good grip
  • Trainers for going ashore
  • Sleeping Bag (packed in a plastic bag; see below)
  • Washkit (including towel), swimming costume if you are hardy. The sea will be about 18 C.

  • Teatowel - PLEASE bring one, we need dry ones for washing up on board. These are hire-boats and do not come with all the things that we are used to having as standard on Kestrel.
  • Seasickness Tablets (strongly recommended if you know you suffer from Seasickness or if you're unsure), get Stugeron (cinnarizine) if you do not have a favourite already
  • iPod, MP3, camera etc, and spare batteries or 12V charger (no reliable mains power on board)
  • VHF, skipper's license, if owned
  • Personal RYA logbook, if owned - you can also buy one through CUYC for cheap, just ask the trip organiser, Greg Chadwick (profile), in advance.

  • Some cash for personal needs (Mythos, tzatziki, kolokithokeftedes, etc etc.). We will be eating on-board nearly every day, and food will be bought communally. The cost will be put on the expenses which we will all pay tothe club back in the K after the trip is over. There are cash machines on many, but not all islands. Some of the places we will stop at will have no place to spend anything anyway.

Waterproofs and boots

A waterproof top is essential and waterproof trousers may be useful,  Check with Greg Chadwick (profile). Although not all Med. trips at this time of year plan to encounter splashy sailing, it may be chilly on the water and might rain one day, so waterproofs are a requirement, especially if you feel queezy and want to be in the fresh air.

Rubber boots are preferred over trainers because they will keep you dry and provide better grip.

If you do not own suitable waterproofs/boots, consult Greg Chadwick (profile) we're not offering our usual club waterproof hire this trip due to logisitcal issues, but we may be able to arrange for some of the club's gear to come out with us.

Sleeping bag

Please do not forget to pack your sleeping bag. If you do not have one in Cambridge and cannot borrow one from a friend, please get in touch with Greg Chadwick (profile), but we will probably just suggest that you buy a £10 discount bag. It won't be cold.
