Duration: 8 evening sessions, in Lent term. |
The course will run on Thursday evenings (you are required to be able to attend 6 out of 8 sessions minimum). There will be a midway exam and a final full two days of teaching and exams at the end of term. In order to be able to provide the necessary amount of teaching, it is essential that students are able to attend these final two days as well as the midway exam afternoon. If this is a major obstacle, please discuss other alternatives with the training officer before signing up. In addition to this group teaching there will be supervision sessions organised once every two weeks (if there is sufficient interest), at a venue and time to be discussed with the students. In total this will provide 40+ hours of teaching together with supervisions and individual sessions.
The material for both the RYA Day Skipper and RYA Yachtmaster Offshore courses will be taught but it will be indicated which syllabus the particular topic comes from, to allow people to focus on just the RYA Day Skipper level material if they wish. Those that choose to take the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Theory assessments will be expected to take the RYA Day Skipper Theory assessment as well unless they already hold RYA Day Skipper Theory. This is to ensure that essential seamanship knowledge is learnt which is not focussed upon in the RYA Yachtmaster assessment.
This is an elementary course in basic seamanship, navigation, and meteorology, suitable for beginners and people with little experience in yachts. Students attempting this course only will generally require only a slight committment of additional time outside of the course for personal study.

This is an advanced course in navigation, meteorology and collision regulations suitable mainly for those with a reasonable amount of background experience in yachting. Students attempting this course will need to commit a reasonable amount of time outside the course to personal study.
This will consist of a Day Skipper level chartwork exam and the real IRPCS exam. There is the possibility to already do the official Yachtmaster chartwork exam on that weekend. The mock chartwork has to be completed in order to be able to do the exams in the exam weekend. If the days planned are a major problem please get in touch with the course organisers so we can arrange an alternative (£10 fee).
The final two days of the course are the 6th and 7th of March. You must be available for these two days.
The dates, times, and venue are listed at the top of the page. The cost of the course includes everything you will need - course packs, handbooks, IRPCS booklet, charts, navigation tables (all worth over £80), instruction, room hire, etc., but excludes a plotter and divider set which some people might already have. You may also like to purchase companion books and other learning materials to accompany the course, details of which are provided but are not considered essential.
CUYC policy is that current students at the university will be given priority for signup on this course. Everyone will be given good notice as to whether or not they have got a place.
To Sign-Up click the sign up link at the top of the page. Please make sure when you sign up that you have reserved two days of the final weekend in your diary. Also please indicate whether you would need a set of plotter and dividers (£18). If you are not already a member of the club you can join for £15. Feel free to ask for any more questions you might have!
