An official RYA Practical Training course for the RYA Day Skipper Practical on the East Coast.

Five days of high quality training focussed on a small group of students to ensure maximum time to learn and practice. Taught by an experienced RYA Instructor, the courses will teach you a variety of different skills from boat handling under power and sail, navigation, pilotage, sail trim and close quarters and a host of other areas, all to the level appropriate for your stage of development as a sailor. This course is exceptional value compared to commercial courses and is run on the Club's own yacht which is an excellent Sigma 38.

The course will be based on the East Coast, departing from Ipswich and cruising the local Thames waters. Over the 5 days of the course each student will plan and execute a series of short passages interspersed with boat handling practice and navigational exercises. Some exercises will be group exercises where the instructor takes general responsibility for the yacht and all students get an opportunity to practice skills such as mooring under sail, coming alongside a pontoon under power, etc, whereas at other times a single student will be given overall responsibility for everything that happens on the yacht and get a morning or day of real "skippering" but with the safety net of the instructor.

Although we now concentrate solely on the RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification, the level and difficulty of skills taught and responsibility given when skippering will depend on how experienced you are and what you wish to gain from the course. Your instructor will discuss this with you before or at the start of the trip.

RYA Day Skipper Practical

The Day Skipper Practical course trains you to be able to skipper a yacht in familiar waters by day. Ideally, you will have completed your Day Skipper Theory course, and have around 100 miles of practical experience as crew on a yacht. No previous skippering or boat handling experience is necessary.

The course will lay emphasis on basic fundamentals of handling the boat under sail and power, so that on completion you will be confident to skipper a yacht from start to finish.

In order to complete an RYA Practical Course a minimum of 5 days training is required, so this one course could be all you need.

Course Prerequisites

Could you pick out the harbour lights?

Could you find the harbour lights?

We require that you must have started an RYA Theory Course (either Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster) before you start your first practical course. You must then have completed your RYA Theory Course before you complete your Day Skipper Practical qualification.
