Kit

Kit bag

All kit should be packed into a collapsible holdall. General limit is 3ft x 1.5ft x 1.5ft, or equivalent volume. Please do not bring suitcases. Rucksacks should only be brought if they have a removable frame or are reasonably collapsable. Any problems with this please e-mail Alex Cowan (profile).

All kit should be packed in plastic bags or the holdall lined with a waterproof liner (e.g. bin liner) - hatches have been known to leak sometimes!

Kit list

The following is a recommended kit list. It is not exhaustive so please feel free to bring additional items if you wish, but do keep valuables to a minimum.

  • At least one (pairs of):
    • Jumpers/Fleeces - wear fleece+jumper over shirt and under waterproofs
    • Trousers - pair to wear underneath sailing waterproofs
  • Base layer clothes (preferably not cotton) to include:
    • T-shirts/turtlenecks - base layer synthetic
    • Socks
    • Underwear
    • drying/wicking long-johns are not needed for the Med., a pair of jeans will be fine if you have overtrousers.

Bring appropriate quantity of base layer clothes to match the duration of your trip. In addition, include a complete spare set in case you get wet! Do not rely on being able to wash your clothes as they do not dry easily at sea, especially in the winter.

  • Sunglasses - VITAL -it can be bright on the water
  • Hat - VITAL - to keep the sun off, and possibly to keep your ears warm if night sailing,
  • Waterproofs (see below)
  • Sea Boots (useful; see below but not essential) or Trainers. In total, we recommend that you pack at least two pairs of footwear in total in case you get wet. Soft soles, good grip
  • Trainers for going ashore
  • Sleeping Bag (packed in a plastic bag; see below)
  • Washkit (including towel), swimming costume if you are hardy. The sea will be about 13 C.

  • Teatowel - PLEASE bring one, we need dry ones for washing up on board
  • Seasickness Tablets (recommended), get Stugeron (cinnarizine) if you do not have a favourite already
  • CDs, iPod etc
  • Camera

  • VHF, skipper's license, if owned
  • Personal RYA logbook, if owned - you can also buy one through CUYC for cheap, just ask the trip organiser, Alex Cowan (profile), in advance.

  • Some cash for personal needs (Pub).

Waterproofs and boots

Waterproofs need to be reasonably substantial but not ocean/offshore gear. Essentially they need to keep you dry for up to eight hours. They should include both a waterproof top and trousers with a good overlap, although for some trips waterproof trousers might be less essential providing you have more than one pair of jeans/trousers - check with Alex Cowan (profile), the trip organiser. Although not all trips plan to encounter splashy sailing, it may be chilly on the water and might rain, so waterproofs are a very good idea indeed especially if you feel queezy and want to be in he fresh air.

Boots are preferred over trainers because they will keep you dry and provide better grip.

If you do not own suitable waterproofs/boots, the club has proper sailing gear by Gill and Musto which can be hired for the price of £18. Boots can be hired for £2. To hire, e-mail Alex Cowan (profile) with your size.

Sleeping bag

Please do not forget to pack your sleeping bag.
