Kit

Please try to keep your kit to a minimum, but bring enough to stay warm.

Clothing

Winter sailing in the UK can be cold and windy. Please bring appropriate clothing, in particular:

  • base layer including longjohns  (synthetic or wool)
  • multiple warm layers - fleece jackets & trousers
  • sailing waterproofs - more substantial than hiking gear, can be hired from the Club
  • sailing boots - can be hired from the Club
  • warm hat
  • balaclava/neck gaiter
  • multiple pairs of warm/waterproof gloves
  • several pairs of warm socks
  • clothing for going ashore

Please note that sailing waterproofs are designed to protect you from both rain and waves and it is advisable to hire a set from the Club if you don't own one.

Waterproofs/boots hire

If you do not own suitable waterproofs/boots, the club has proper sailing gear by Gill and Musto which can be hired for the price of £18. Boots can be hired for £2. To hire, e-mail Nikolaus Krall (profile) with your size.

Sleeping bag

Please do not forget to pack your sleeping bag. If you do not have one in Cambridge and cannot borrow one from a friend, please get in touch with Nikolaus Krall (profile), we might be able to help you out.

Other kit

  • washkit (including towel), swimming costume if you are hardy. The sea will be about 13 C.
  • seasickness tablets (recommended), get Stugeron (cinnarizine) if you do not have a favourite already
  • CDs, iPod etc
  • camera
  • sunglasses

  • VHF, skipper's license, if owned
  • Personal RYA logbook, if owned - you can also buy one through CUYC for cheap, just ask the trip organiser, Nikolaus Krall (profile), in advance.

  • some cash for personal needs (Pub).

Kit bag

All kit should be packed into a collapsible holdall. General limit is 3ft x 1.5ft x 1.5ft, or equivalent volume. Please do not bring suitcases. Rucksacks should only be brought if they have a removable frame or are reasonably collapsable. Any problems with this please e-mail Nikolaus Krall (profile).

All kit should be packed in plastic bags or the holdall lined with a waterproof liner (e.g. bin liner) - hatches have been known to leak sometimes!
