Course Overview

Sailing upwind and tide to pick up a mooring buoy.

An official RYA Practical Training course for the RYA Day Skipper Practical on the South Coast, beginning in Poole on the evening of Saturday 25th September and ending in Portsmouth on the evening of Thursday 30th. This course also provides a good training opportunity for those who already hold a Day Skipper Practical Certificate and are planning to take exams to become CUYC skippers.

The course consists of five days of high quality training focussed on a small group of students to ensure maximum time to learn and practice.  Led by an experienced RYA Instructor, the course will teach you a variety of different skills including handling under power and sail, navigation. passage making, emergency situations, pilotage and sail trim, all to the level appropriate for your stage of development as a sailor. This course is exceptional value compared to commercial courses and is run on the Club's own yacht, an excellent Sigma 38.

This course will be based on the South Coast, departing from Poole in Dorset and cruising the Channel waters to Portsmouth. Over the 5 days of the course each student will plan and execute a short passage, interspersed with boat handling practice and navigational exercises. Some exercises will be group exercises where the instructor takes general responsibility for the yacht and all students get an opportunity to practice skills such as mooring under sail, coming alongside a pontoon under power, etc., whereas at other times a single student will be given overall responsibility for everything that happens on the yacht and get a morning or day of real "skippering" but with the safety net of the instructor.

Although we now concentrate solely on the RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification, the level and difficulty of skills taught and responsibility given when skippering will depend on how experienced you are and what you wish to gain from the course. Your instructor will discuss this with you before or at the start of the trip.

RYA Day Skipper Practical

The Day Skipper Practical course trains you to be able to skipper a yacht in familiar waters by day. The course lays emphasis on basic fundamentals of handling the boat under sail and power, so that on completion you should be confident to skipper a yacht from start to finish.

A minimum of 5 days' training is required for the practical, so if your instructor is happy that you have successfully completed this 5-day course you will be awarded your Day Skipper Practical certificate.

Course Prerequisites and Assumed Knowledge

Could you pick out the harbour lights?

Could you find the harbour lights?

We require that you must have started an RYA Theory Course (either Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster) before you start your first practical course. You must then have completed your RYA Theory Course before you complete your Day Skipper Practical qualification.

5 days, 100 miles, and 4 night hours on board a sailing yacht are expected as pre-course experience. Basic navigation (such as learned on the RYA Day Skipper Theory course) and basic helmsmanship are assumed.

To discuss the course in more detail and work out if is right for you, please e-mail training@cuy.org.uk.

For more information regarding the CUYC training scheme, please see the training pages.

Please note that Junior members will be given priority for places.
