Kit

Costs How To Pay Typical Day Kit Safety FAQ Questions?

Kit bag

All kit should be packed into a collapsable holdall. General limit is 3ft x 1.5ft x 1.5ft, or equivalent volume. Please do not bring suitcases. Rucksacks should only be brought if they have a removable frame or none at all. All kit should be packed in plastic bags or the holdall lined with a waterproof liner (e.g. bin liner) - hatches have been known to leak sometimes! Any problems with this please e-mail the event organiser.

Kit list

The following is a recommended kit list. It is not exhaustive so please feel free to bring additional items if you wish, but do keep valuables to a minimum.

  • At least two (pairs of):
    • Jumpers/Fleeces
    • Trousers
  • Base layer clothes to include:
    • T-shirts/turtlenecks
    • Socks
    • Underwear

Bring appropriate quantity of base layer clothes to match the duration of your trip. In addition, include a spare set in case you get wet!

  • Hat and (sailing, preferably, otherwise normal) gloves (needed for night passages and windy days)
  • Waterproofs (see below)
  • Sea Boots (highly recommended; see below) or Trainers (At least two pairs in case you get wet. Soft soles, good grip)
  • Trainers for going ashore
  • Shorts
  • Sleeping Bag (packed in a plastic bag)
  • Sunglasses
  • Washkit (including towels)
  • Sun Cream
  • Teatowel
  • Seasickness Tablets (if needed)
  • Games (playing cards, frisbee etc)
  • CDs

  • VHF, skipper's license, if owned
  • Personal logbook, if owned
  • Some cash

Waterproofs and boots

Waterproofs need to be reasonably substantial but not ocean/offshore gear. Essentially they need to keep you dry for up to eight hours. They should include both a waterproof top and trousers, although for some trips waterproof trousers might be less essential providing you have more than one pair of jeans/trousers - check with your event organiser.

Boots are preferred over trainers because they will keep you dry and provide better grip.

If you do not own suitable waterproofs/boots, then you can hire or buy some.

To Hire:

The club has proper sailing gear by Musto and Gill which can be hired for a bargain price of only £13 per trip! Boots can be hired for £2. To hire, e-mail the event organiser with your size.
