Membership or no membership, you are encouraged to join our ever growing (more than 1,000 students!) official mailing list. To start receiving enticing e-mails about forthcoming trips, training events, races and socials, please register for an account, this will sign you up to the mailing list automatically.

There are three "classes" of Membership:

  • Junior Membership: Undergraduate or graduate students of the University of Cambridge or Associated Educational Institutions.
  • Senior Membership: University of Cambridge fellows, post-doctoral researchers and alumni (including those in education elsewhere) not meeting the criteria for Junior Membership.
  • Affiliate Membership: Any other candidates for membership, including University of Cambridge research staff, other university staff, students at other universities and the general public.

Cost

Membership costs £15 regardless of class.

Validity

Membership is valid for one calendar year from the trip/course/event at which it is first used.

Trip Sign-up Preference Policy

Where the number of Members who sign up for an Event exceeds the number of places available for this Event the following order of preferences shall be respected: (1) Junior Members, (2) Senior Members, (3) Affiliate Members.

There shall be one deadline before which Junior Members have priority on signing up, after which Senior and Affiliate Members will be considered. For weekend trips the deadline shall be no less than two weeks before the trip. For longer trips the deadline shall be set by the Trip Organiser in consultation with the Vice-Commodore Sailing and shall be no less than three weeks. For Training Courses the deadline shall be set by the Training Officers in consultation with the Vice-Commodore Sailing. Trip Organisers should endeavour to find out from Senior and Affiliate Members when they need to know if there is space available for an event.

CUYC reserves the right to sign up a Senior of Affiliate Member to an Event before the agreed deadline at the discretion of the CUYC Committee (e.g., where the Senior or Affiliate Member has a particular attribute that would be useful or is required on the trip or course). Such cases will be agreed between the Trip Organiser, the Vice-Commodore Sailing, and the Commodore.

How to join?

Website Account
The first thing to do is register for an account on the CUYC website. This will allow you to sign up for events and trips and will automatically sign you up to the mailing list.

Crew Register
The Crew Register is what we use as a membership form. The amount of information that you need to give us depends on what kind of events you are signing up for. At a minimum you will need to sign it to attend social events, with more information being needed for training courses and sailing trips. The form is electronic, once you have registered, you can find the crew register form in your account pages.

The form asks you to sign to your acceptance of:

  • The CUYC Safety Rules (view as a PDF document here).
  • The CUYC Regulations, especially the CUYC Damages Policy. CUYC Damages Policy is available for viewing here, with a link to the rest of the CUYC regulations.
